DIY Small Kitchen Updates

I’ve been working on making over my kitchen since before I even moved in. It’s a pretty small room off my living room, but it has a great big pass through, two nice windows and a door to the back yard. Like most other areas in my house (the basement, the whole 3rd floor), a lovely shade of green had made it’s mark in here. The cabinets are relatively new-ish and in pretty good condition, but they were painted a sage/olive green. It wasn’t doing anyone any favors. After hours and hours of pinning (check out my Dream Kitchen board to see what inspired me), I decided to go with a white and dark gray color scheme. I couldn’t wait to share this transformation, so these are all just iPhone pics. Pretty, styled photos will come some day!

I sanded, primed and painted all of them myself and made a few layout changes. First, the upper cabinets were raised about 10 inches. This allowed me to put an open shelf below them for my most used items and eventually some stylish decor. Second, I had to do something about the L-shaped cabinet layout that cramped up the back door. After living in the house for a few weeks with the dogs, it was like a wrestling match to try to open the back door for them in the morning. There just wasn’t enough room. Plus, corner cabinets are a pain and you can never reach the items stored back in the corner. So, goodbye L-shaped cabinet! I replaced it with a matching base cabinet from Home Depot (it only cost $148) with three generous drawers and painted it to match everything else.

You can see I’m still trying to decide what color to paint the walls. It’s between gray and gray… how will I ever decide?! One of this biggest improvements in this space was adding knobs and pulls to all the cabinets. Whoever installed this kitchen originally never got around to that. The white knobs are from Ikea and the chrome bin pulls came from a friend (originally Restoration Hardware). I also applied those little silicone rubbery dots to the inside corners of every door and drawer and they make closing everything feel so much more upgraded! If you don’t have those on your cabinets, go buy them today!
