Halloween Couples Costume With Your Dog: Surfer Girl and Shark

A scary labrador shark got a bite out of my surfboard! But I forgive her because she’s so cute! This costume is great because it’s very dog walking friendly. You can easily head out to a Halloween costume parade or join in on trick or treating. It was such an easy costume to create, but it looks so fun that everyone will be asking how you thought of it!

How to DIY A Surfer and Shark Costume for your Dog

Make the Surfboard for your costume

To create this costume I picked up two pieces of foam core board from Staples. I chose neon green for the surfboard and dark grey for Lucy’s shark fin.

To cut out the surfboard: I used a utility knife to cut a slightly rounded point at the top. I traced out “bite marks” at the other end and cut them out, too. To give it more of a surfboard look, I added 3 stripes of bright washi tape down the center.

For my surfer girl costume, I went with items I already had in my closet like board shorts, a cute rashguard and flip flops.

Make the Shark Fin for Your Dog

First, cut out the fin. To make the shark fin, I sketched a fin shape and cut it out using my utility knife. Once I cut it out I held it up to Lucy and trimmed it down to be a little shorter to fit the length of her back. I cut a second piece of foam core in a little rectangle to use as a support piece under the fabric wrap.

Second, make the fabric wrap. I had this grey fabric left over from another project, but if I were to buy new, I would look for something with stretch in it! Either way, measure your dog at the widest point of their chest and cut the fabric big enough that a few inches overlap. I used self-adhesive velcro (like this) to fasten the ends together. Make sure this fits your dog around the widest point of their ribs, you don’t want it to slide back to their waist because it will fall off.

Third, glue the fin to the fabric. I attached the rectangular support piece of foam core to the underside of the fabric and glued the fin piece to the top using E6000 craft glue.

Tip: Carefully use your utility knife to dissect the foam core at the base of the fin and flay out the cardboard. This will give you a sturdier, wider edge to glue down. You can see how I did it in the detail shot above!

Thank you so much Steph! I had way too much fun creating it, and I think Lucy had a good time modeling – there was a lot of “shark bait” involved!

This is such a simple idea but it’s brilliant! I don’t have time for complicated costumes and if I had a dog (soon, hopefully) then I’d so be doing this!

Hi! I absolutely love this idea, however, I have a 6 month old golden doodle named Lucy and I would like Lucy to be the surfer girl and I am considering attaching the surfboard to her back, I would really appreciate some input !

Lucy sounds like tons of fun! But a wiggly puppy is hard to dress up! There are pre-made shark costumes at PetCo and on Chewy.com that are really inexpensive and might be more durable than this. Or you could try attaching the surfboard to her back. Maybe buy a harness (or use one you already have) then zip tie a foam core surf board to it. Good luck!!
