Healthy Shamrock Shake Smoothie Recipe For Dogs

One of my favorite things as a kid was the Shamrock Shake! I always looked forward to March and St. Patrick’s Day when McDonald’s would release this minty treat for a few weeks. Now that I’m grown up and like to eat healthily, I’m not as excited about a traditional Shamrock Shake. Have they gotten sweeter, or has my taste changed?

Either way, I found a way to get my minty Shamrock Shake fix with a healthy smoothie recipe. This Shamrock Shake smoothie is so healthy I can even share it with my dog! Lucy absolutely loved it!

My dog Lucy’s two favorite foods in the world are yogurt and bananas. This healthy Shamrock Shake smoothie contains both! Yogurt is a great source of calcium and probiotics for dogs (just make sure it’s plain with no added sugar). Then dog-friendly bananas provide potassium. The added mint gives her a nice burst of fresh breath, too!

A quick note about making dog-friendly foods… When you’re making a recipe to share with your dog, make sure there’s no added sugar or salt since those ingredients aren’t good for them. Never use vanilla yogurt, you want to make sure it’s plain.

Safe Smoothie Ingredients for Dogs

For this dog-friendly smoothie, I used healthy ingredients like plain unsweetened almond milk, plain greek yogurt, fresh spinach, fresh mint and frozen bananas. If you don’t have any fresh mint handy, you could also use a few drops of natural peppermint essential oil.

If you’d like an alternative to the almond milk, you could also use goat milk which is becoming easier to find in stores. Trader Joe’s carries it now! They also have goat milk kefir which could make for a good liquid base for this smoothie, too.

Dog Friendly Shamrock Shake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup Plain Almond Milk
  • 2 heaping tbsp Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 large handful of spinach
  • 4 sprigs of mint

Add all ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth. This works best if the bananas were sliced before being frozen. If you don’t have fresh mint on hand, just substitute with a few drops of 100% natural peppermint oil.

Pour half of the smoothie mixture into a cup for you and the other half in a bowl for your dog! I topped mine with whipped cream and Lucy got a shamrock shaped dog treat. You can make your own shamrock dog treats using this cookie cutter and my favorite easy treat recipe.

Lucy is such a helper in the kitchen! She made sure I stayed focus and mixed these Shamrock Shakes up as fast as possible. To make it all a little more fun, I garnished her glass with a lucky organic shamrock treat from Bo’s Bones. We both got a fresh mint leaf on top since you can never have enough mint!

If you’re looking for healthy shamrock and St. Patrick’s Day dog treats, click over to Etsy. I found these Lucky Dog Treats that get their green from spirulina (a super food that’s safe for dogs).

Although a lot of people give whipped cream to their dogs, I would not recommend giving whipped cream to dogs. It usually contains sugar which isn’t good for your dog.
