I love taking road trips with Lucy, and this year we have been lucky enough to go on two big trips together! Everyone loves time spent getting away on the open road. In October we drove down to Asheville, North Carolina and spent eight days exploring the city.
Since Asheville is pretty far from Pittsburgh, we broke the drive up with overnights at Red Roof Inn on the way down and back up. The greatest thing about Red Roof Inn is that pets stay free! That’s why it was at the top of my list when planning this trip.

Lucy and I had a great time! Unlike other “pet friendly” hotels, there are no additional charges for your dog to stay with you. Even though we were kind of in-and-out, we made the most of everything they had to offer. One of Lucy’s favorite things about our trips together is sleeping in the hotel bed. She quickly made herself comfortable. Based on her expression, she was ready for a nap!
Where To Stay On A Road Trip With Your Dog
If you’re a dog mom planning a road trip with your pup, Red Roof knows your pet is like family! Pet-friendly accommodations are available at every Red Roof Inn at over 520 locations in 36 states! Most dogs don’t like to be in the car for more than a few hours, so why not break your trip up with a quick over night stay. I think Red Roof is the perfect place to stay since many of them are conveniently located close to the highway.
The Red Roof Inn that we stayed in Wytheville, VA on the way down had so much green space all around the hotel! There was a designated dog area in the back, with complimentary waste bags. There was also a big grassy right in the middle of the hotel, so no matter what, we didn’t have to go far for a potty break before bed or first thing in the morning. It’s the little things that separate “dogs allowed” from “dog lovers”. And I can tell that Red Roof definitely loves dogs!
In the morning I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast, which I shared with Lucy (bananas are her favorite food)! With a good hot breakfast, I was ready to get back in the car and drive the rest of the way.
We had a really big room (thank you Red Roof Inn!), that had laminate floors throughout. Perfect for dogs! They made it so easy for me to clean up around Lucy’s water and food bowls. There was also a desk area in case I wanted to update my blog during our stay… but I opted to lay in bed with Lucy and watch HBO instead!
