The Best Vacuum For Dog Hair

I love my Shark Rotator! It has very powerful suction and an adjustable roller bar that you can raise and lower depending on how thick your carpeting is. One of my favorite things is the light on the head of the vacuum. I feel like it’s brighter than other’s I’ve had before and it really shows where the dog hair is hiding on my floors (aka, everywhere).

This vacuum also comes with a bunch of different attachments. For my stairs, I usually use the motorized brush attachment to do the flat area (I have a runner on my stairs so the brush really loosens up the dog hair that gets in there). Then, I get out the crevice tool and do the crevice of the runner where a ton of dog hair settles.

I also love the Lift-Away feature of the Shark Rotator vacuum because you can detach the heavy main part to make it lighter to use on the stairs or to reach under tables and chairs.

Vacuum and Mop at The Same Time with CrossWave

This device from Bissell is a total game changer! The Crosswave Pet Pro is one of my favorite appliances in my house! It doesn’t replace a regular vacuum (like my Shark), but it will still suck up pet hair and dirt while it scrubs and washes my floors.

I absolutely love using this in my kitchen where we end up with a ton of drool and puddles from the water bowl. It’s also great for cleaning up salty or muddy paw prints on my hardwood floors during the winter and rainy months. The CrossWave eliminates the need to vacuum before mopping because it does both at the same time!

I buy the cleaning liquid that’s sold to go with this. It’s earth friendly and safe for use around kids and pets. It also has Frebreeze build in so it neutralizes a lot of smelly odors that the dogs leave around. If you’d like an all natural approach, you could use water mixed with a little white vinegar and lemon essential oil. But just know that this machine is designed to use the washing liquid that Bissell makes.

In my cleaning routine, if I vacuum a couple of times a week then, ideally, I use the Crosswave once a week or so. There’s nothing better than the feeling of clean floors on my bare feet and this leaves the floor squeaky clean!

Another really cool thing about the Crosswave (you can read my full review here) is that you can use it on low profile carpet or area rugs. When I first got it I used it on the rug in my bedroom and I swear it got up puke stains that I kinda forgot were even there!

Real Dog Mom Review from Amazon:

ANWoodall said, “We have laminate flooring and two dogs, one of which is a chocolate lab that sheds as if her life depended on it. The other is a 12 year old Yorkie who knows how to play dead, give a high five, sit, lay down, and use a Pilates reformer but can’t for the life of him remember to pee outside. I like efficiency. Do the job right and fast and I’m happy (insert 12 year old giggles). It’s easy to assemble, it picked up enough hair to knit two Chewbacca’s and it didn’t spread the dirt/hair all of the place, and it dried within minutes. It’s like a shampooer for your hard surface floored.

If you’re looking for a powerful vacuum, this isn’t your jam. If you’re looking for efficiency to save you from vacuuming, mopping, then yelling at your children to stay in their freaking rooms so they don’t walk on your freshly mopped floors only to have the dogs follow you around as you mop like you’re leading a conga line, then you need this in your life! You do need to take some things apart and clean after each use, which adds another step, but you’re probably used to cleaning up after everyone anyway.”

How to Clean Up Dog Hair in Between Vacuuming

Even with all these fabulous appliances, I don’t want to lug out the vacuum or the Crosswave every day. So in between actual cleaning, I Swiffer. I don’t even consider this actual cleaning because it’s so easy and takes about 2 minutes. But in those 2 minutes, it’s amazing what dirt and dog hair I pick up.

There are also some little spots that the vacuum doesn’t reach well (even with all the attachments!). For example, under and behind my refrigerator or under the stove. I’ve swiffered up enough dog hair from under my fridge to stuff an entire teddy bear!

Last week I pulled a cherry tomato out from under the fridge with my Swiffer. Gross! And I thought I had a super clean house. Oh well, with dogs there’s always something else to clean!

Swiffer actually has a line of pet specific dry cloths than have Febreeze built-in. I really love this because not only do they wipe up a lot of hair and dust, but they leave behind a little fresh scent. Since I keep my refills in the pantry with the dog food it also keeps that area smelling fresh!

*2021 Update: I’m currently working to remove as many chemical fragrances from our home as possible and no longer use the products with Febreeze built-in. You can learn about the impact of VOCs from these chemicals and how they’re linked to cancer in dogs (and people, too!) in this detailed study from the EPA.

The Best Tool for Getting Dog Hair Out of Your Car

If you have dogs in and out of your car on a regular basis, vacuuming will definitely clean up the bulk of the hair and dirt. But there are certain spots in your car that the vacuum literally seems to do nothing! Whatever that material is that’s like the soft side of velcro and lines the whole way back area of my car is like a magnet for dog hair.

A few years ago I found this little tool called the Lilly Brush. It’s around $10 and it’s so simple, but it’s really effective at getting the dog hair out of my car. Last Summer I took a road trip to the Hamptons with some other dog moms and our pups. We had an amazing time but I had sooooo much sand, dirt and dog hair in my car afterward. I used the powerful vacuum at the car wash but nothing got it all out like this little Lilly Brush.

Stephanie said, “I’m absolutely blown away by this magical product. I have searched for MONTHS and tried numerous products to get my American Bulldogs hair out of my seats. She loves car rides but her shirt coarse hair sticks and I thought was impossible to remove from my car… I took 10 minutes of my lunchtime today to try it out… OMG AMAZEBALLS!!!!”

The Best Way to Clean Up Dog Hair, Fast!

When in doubt, I always go for a good old sticky lint roller! Any good dog mom needs to have a few lint rollers strategically stashed around the house! If I have friends coming over in five minutes and there’s no time to vacuum the couch, I just run the lint roller over a few times. I have these in my closet, bathroom, kitchen and in my car. They’re inexpensive and come with refills that will last you a while.
