Some said it’s the highlight of their Halloween! So I knew I had to come up with a good costume for this year!
I’m really excited to share with you the DIY dog costumes I created. Since I’ve been eating so much pasta during quarantine, I was inspired to dress Lucy and Burt as Spaghetti and Meatballs! This was a fun dog costume to make, and I promise it’s easy to do! Keep reading to see what we’ve dressed up as in the past few years and get tips on making your own dog spaghetti and meatballs costume!
Our Best Dog + Owner Matching Halloween Costumes
I love to great creative and think outside the box for my costumes with the dogs. When it was just Lucy and me, we did a lot of great dog mom couples costumes like Surfer Girl and Shark, Dorothy and the Lion and a Magician and Rabbit!
When I added my rescue lab Burt to our family 2 years ago I had to come up with dog mom group costumes for all three of us to wear together! The first year we went as the Three Musketeers! What a great way to make our new recuse dog Burt feel like he’s part of the family!
Our 2nd year as a family of three, the dogs and I went as Snow White, the Evil Witch and her Poison Apple! Lucy was a beautiful Snow White, I got to dress as the Evil Queen when she transformed into the old witch and Burt was the cutest Poison Apple you ever saw!
All of these costumes were so fun to take photos in and wear to dog friendly Halloween parties. For 2020, things are a little different. We won’t be going to any parties, but I still go to take really great photos of our matching group Halloween costume! Scroll down to the end to see how I added myself into the mix this year… there’s a surprise twist!
Spaghetti and Meatballs: DIY Dog Halloween Costume
I don’t know if it’s all the pasta I’ve been eating during quarantine in 2020, but for some reason, I had the idea to dress Lucy and Burt up as Spaghetti and Meatballs for Halloween this year! I love this dog costume so much because it makes everyone smile. I love to spread joy and happiness through what I do with my dogs.
How I Made A Spaghetti and Meatballs Dog Costume
This DIY dog Halloween costume took some creativity, but it was pretty easy to make! I got all the supplies I needed from Joann and did curbside pickup. The only tool I needed from home was my glue gun!
Spaghetti + Meatballs Costume Supplies:
- Dark Brown Felt (or a color that matches your dog’s fur)
- Chunky Yarn (off white looks most like spaghetti)
- Velcro Dots
- 3″ Foam Craft Balls
- Brown Paint (for meatballs)
- Red Paint (for sauce)
- Glue Gun (like this one)
- Floral Wire
Putting the Spaghetti and Meatballs Costume Together:
The first thing I did was cut my dark brown felt into the base of the costume. I used a dog rain coat I already had as the template. The felt wrapped around the front of the dog’s necks and went about halfway down their backs. I cut 2 strips of felt to attach to the sides and wrap under the dog’s bellies to hold the costume in place. Use the velcro dots to attach everything.
For the meatballs, I painted foam craft balls brown. Once I had a coat of paint done, I felt like the balls were too round and didn’t look like real meatballs. So I used a rolling pin and a hammer to whack them and make them more uneven! That was a fun part!! I touched up with more brown paint then added red paint to look like sauce.

For the spaghetti, I used 3 full rolls of chunky yard to make these 2 costumes for my large dogs. If you have 1 smaller dog, 1 roll of yarn will probably be enough. I wrapped the yarn around my hand and elbow to make the long loops, and around my fingers to make smaller loops to put along the middle of the costume and on the hats.
For each loop of yarn I tied it with a small length of yarn to secure it, then hot glued each section on the felt backing. You can play with this to make your pasta as voluminous or stringy as you like. Add red paint to look like sauce.
To attach the meatballs, I use floral wire. I poked wire into the balls, then ran it through the felt and back to the front side and wrapped it around itself. FYI: this wasn’t the MOST sturdy attachment and we lost a few balls while we walked around. But, it’s just for one night, so I don’t think it has to be perfect!
I repeated these same steps to make the little spaghetti and meatball hats for the dogs – I think those are the best part of this dog Halloween costume! To secure the hats on their heads, I hot glued yarn to the felt base and covered the glue with a little felt scrap to secure it. Then I just tied the yarn under the dog’s chins.
Dog Owner Matching Costume Ideas for Spaghetti and Meatballs
I bet you’re wondering how I worked myself into the dog’s Spaghetti and Meatballs costumes this year. My followers guessed that I was parmesan cheese, a breadstick, a fork a chef… and even Buddy the Elf covering my spaghetti with candy and maple syrup! While those are all hilarious and fun ideas for a matching dog mom costume, this is what I ended up doing!
Together we’re a Spaghetti Western!!
I thought this would be the perfect dog mom costume to match the dogs this year since it even comes with a Covid-safe face covering! Plus, I have all the clothes to dress up like a cowboy already in my closet!
I found this great wild-west looking mural and photoshopped the sign to say Doggo’s Diner!
