Taking a road trip with your dog is one of the greatest experiences a dog mom can have! It’s so special to create new memories together and show your dog cool places around the country. I love taking Lucy and Burt on road trips, especially in the Summer. We recently took a beach trip where Lucy and I got to take Burt to the ocean for the first time. We were all pretty excited about that!
After thousands of miles on the road together I’ve discovered some qualities that make a car super dog friendly. So, when I saw that Autotrader is celebrating National Dog Day by making it really easy to find a dog lover approved car, I knew I had to check out what they have to say.

Finding a Dog Friendly Car on Autotrader
On the Autotrader website they recommend a few key features that would definitely get four paws up from your dog! They include:
- Tinted glass to keep your dog cool
- A flat cargo floor for easy entry or to hold a dog crate
- A panoramic sunroof to let in air and light
- Cargo-area tie downs to secure crates, beds or bags
- Rear-seat A/C vents to keeping your pet cool especially when you can’t have the windows down
I was so happy to read this list because my car checks off all the boxes! I totally agree with all those features, especially the rear seat A/C vents. According to Autotrader, some SUVs and vans even have third-row vents. That’s something to aspire to!
I love that it’s so easy to get a car online now, you can certainly find a car that you love and it won’t take you very long. You don’t even need to worry about getting your new car to your house. This is something that people dread – they find a car that they love, but it’s miles and miles away. But all they have to do now is make use of a vehicle shipping company like Cars Relo and they can get the car of their dreams!
Car Shopping With My Dog
When I was shopping for a new car about 2 years ago, there were some features I looked for specifically with Lucy in mind. I knew I wanted a hatchback or small SUV so she could easily get in and out. And I wanted a cargo area that was big enough for Lucy to be comfortable in.
In my old car there was dog hair and dirt everywhere from the rear window to the dahsboard, so I was really excited about having a “way back” designated for the dog.
When it came time to make a final decision, I took Lucy to the dealership with me and tested that she could jump in and out of the back. I even climbed in the way back with her and had the saleswoman shut the trunk just to make sure it was comfortable enough for my fur baby! They might have thought I was crazy. And they’d be right, because I’m crazy for my dog! You’d do the same thing, right? I know my friend did when she went to her local car dealership. It’s important that your dog can fit in the car too, and is comfortable. For those people who spend the majority of their time with their dogs, it’s vital that you find a vehicle that your dog can get into and that you also like. My friend found a lovely second-hand vehicle that she seems to really like and her dog also seems fond of it. She visited Conklin Cars, which she described as Salina’s choice for used automobiles. Of course, there are other dealerships too in that area, but she seems to have found her dream car at that one! It’s important to keep shopping around until you find the car for you.
