How To Make These Easy Kale and Apple Frozen Dog Treats

One of my favorite things to make for the dogs are frozen treats. The best part about super-easy homemade frozen treats is that you can make them with any dog-friendly ingredients you have laying around. For this recipe, I looked in my fridge and found a bag of apples and some kale that was starting to wilt.

I know that both kale and apples contain tons of nutrients that are healthy for dogs. Dark leafy greens are packed with antioxidants that fight free-radicals. Kale, in particular, is great at detoxifying the body. Apples are packed with fiber and pectin that helps your dog’s digestion and can actually fuel the good bacteria in their gut.

So, let’s make these easy Kale and Apple Frozen Dog Treats!

Why I add Coconut Oil to These Frozen Dog Treats

To make this recipe even more nutritious, I added coconut oil. Not only does this help the treats freeze better (and pop out of the mold more easily), but coconut oil is also great for your dog’s skin, digestion and dental health.

Coconut Oil is naturally anti-bacterial and supports the balance of healthy bacteria in your dog’s gut. It’s also anti-inflammatory and can help calm down inflamed digestive tracts. If your dog has an upset tummy, coconut oil could help!

Those anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties also make coconut oil really great for your dog’s dental health! A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body and I love to find creative ways to keep my dog’s teeth clean without brushing.

Frozen Dog Treat Recipe Ideas

I’ve made frozen dog treats in a freezable silicone mold (like this one) with all kinds of ingredients before. Check out my recipes for frozen watermelon treats that are so delicious I even share them with the dogs!

Although we usually think of pumpkin in the Fall, it’s a healthy ingredient that can supplement your dog’s diet year-round! Check out this post where I have pumpkin treats 3 different ways (two of them are frozen!).

And of course, I love making pupsicles! What sets pupsicles apart from regular frozen dog treats is that I will use something edible as the “stick”. I have two really great pupsicle recipes that you can check out. Decide if you want to go the basic route or make something more creative!

RECIPE: Easy Kale, Apple +Coconut Oil Frozen Dog Treat

Ingredients
1 Apple
2 cups Kale
2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
+ Water for texture

Directions
For this recipe, I used a food processor. Cut your apple into large chunks, leave the peel on but make sure to discard the core and any seeds (apple seeds can be poisonous to dogs). Remove the stems from your kale.

Add them along with the coconut oil to your food processor and pulse until you have a paste. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time until your paste is a little runny. The water will help these freeze into nice solid treats.

Put your mixture into a silicone mold and put it in the freeze for at least 4 hours or until frozen solid.

Fun Ways to Enjoy These Frozen Dog Treats

You can give these healthy treats to your dog on their own. But I also like to use them alongside other toys and treats to make the fun last a little longer! You can put these frozen treats inside a Kong or other enrichment toy.

You could also add them to your dog’s dinner bowl to make mealtime a little more interesting. Plus, the apple, kale and coconut oil will help your dog digest their meal better!

Sounds like a wonderful idea. I have everything except the silicone molds – where do you get them?

Hi Linda! You can find silicone molds like this on Amazon and probably also at the dollar store. You don’t have to get a special mold, it could just be for ice cubes 🙂
