There’s nothing better on a Summer day than some fresh, juicy watermelon! Did you know watermelon is a great healthy food to share with you dog? You can let them nibble on a slice or take it one step further and make frozen watermelon treats that your dog will love.
Since I always love to take things one step further, I whipped up these treats for Lucy on one super hot and muggy day. She loved them so much that she wanted to eat them right out of the silicone treat mold, and the bowl, and my hand… she pretty much wanted to eat them all no matter what. Let me show you how to make frozen watermelon treats that your dog will love (just like Lucy already does!).
Is Watermelon Safe for Dogs?
According to the AKC, watermelon “is a health-food powerhouse, low in calories and packed with nutrients—vitamins A, B6, and C, and potassium.” When giving it to your dog, watch out for seeds that could cause an intestinal blockage. “It’s also probably not a good idea to allow a dog to chew on the rind, because it can cause gastrointestinal upset.”
Those are two problems that are easy to solve. I buy seedless watermelons, slice it up for Lucy and throw away the rind. That part doesn’t taste good anyhow!
Watermelons are very affordable and easy to find in the Summer, two more reasons why this makes a great treat for your pup!
You don’t want to over-do it with the watermelon, or any other snack. Even with healthy foods, there can be too much of a good thing. Treats should only make up 10% of your dog’s daily food.
Frozen Watermelon Treats Are Great for Sharing
These frozen treats were so easy to make! I can’t believe I haven’t done it before. The watermelon rind bowl is totally optional, but I think it looks so cute and made it even more fun for me to present the treats to Lucy. The watermelon bowl would also be great if you’re hosting a PAWty!
Something really fun about these treats is that you can share them with your dog. I love to sample what I make for the dogs, but they’re usually crunchy biscuits or peanut butter pupcakes. These frozen watermelon treats are something I actually want to eat!
If you don’t want to snack on the frozen treats with your dog, or they make your teeth too cold, you could also save some of the blended up fruit to make a watermelon mojito for yourself! Just add rum, mint and a splash of club soda for the official dog mom cocktail of summer!
Frozen Watermelon Dog Treat Recipe
Are you ready for the easiest recipe ever? I add coconut oil to the watermelon because it’s such a healthy ingredient. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and anti-inflammatory so it can keep your dog’s mouth clean and also help their digestion.
Ingredients:
Watermelon
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
Fresh Mint (optional)
Directions:
Slice up a nice ripe watermelon, discarding the rind and as many seeds as you can.
Add the fruit to a blender or food processor until you have about 2 cups. Add coconut oil and the optional fresh mint leaves. Blend to liquify.
Pour mixture into silicone dog treat molds like these. Freeze for at least 4 hours or until solid.
Then ENJOY!
