Podcast Episode 183: Grow Your Pet Business with Pinterest

Pinterest is always a priority in my pet business. This month Pinterest is a special focus because it’s the theme in Wear Wag Repeat Society. I believe that every pet business that has a website should be on Pinterest using their own original pins to drive traffic to their website. It’s effective for online businesses, in-person pet services and everything in between.

If you’ve been putting off getting your Pinterest business account optimized, this episode will get you headed in the right direction. Even if you already have things set up, it’s worth listening to discover if there’s a tweak you could make to help grow your account, and grow traffic to your website!

5 Ways to Optimize Your Pet Business Pinterest Account

I want to share some stats to show how impactful Pinterest can be for your pet business. I checked my Google Analytics for a 6 month period earlier this year and pulled these traffic source numbers.

Organic traffic to my website over 6 months:
395 visitors from Instagram
About 1,000 visitors from Facebook
About 4,800 visitors from Google

But are you ready for this… Pinterest sent me 48,719 visitors in those 6 months! That’s dog lovers signing up for my email list, clicking my affiliate links, checkout out my shop and just generally knowing about me and my business. Ready to get that kind of result? Listen to this episode to make sure your account is optimized and you have a solid strategy.

Overview of this Episode:

  • How Pinterest is more of a search engine rather than a social network
  • Why you should use a Business account on Pinterest
  • Claiming your website on Pinterest
  • How to optimize your profile name and bio
  • Creating boards for your niche
  • Integrating Pinterest on your website

Set up a Pinterest Business Account

The first thing you want to do is to make sure you have a business account so you can access Pinterest Analytics. This data is key in your strategy to grow your account and the website traffic you get from your pins.

I hear a lot of questions about how a business account can affect your reach on other social platforms. But on Pinterest, you don’t get penalized for having a business account (and to be honest, you really don’t on the other sites either!).

Claim your Website + Install a Tracking Code

Part of setting up your business account is to claim your website. I break this down into its own step because it’s so important! This is how you’ll get access to lots of extra insights and data about traffic and clicks on your pins. You’ll also be able to see what pins your website visitors are pinning on their own.

To set this up, Pinterest provides a code that you will need to enter on your website in the header or footer. This article from Pinterest walks you through how to claim your website. I also believe there’s a place in the Yoast plugin where you can put the tracking code.

Use Pet Industry Keywords in Your Name and Bio

Since Pinterest is more of a search engine than a social network, it’s so important to have a keyword-optimized name and bio. You should use specific words and terms that someone might search for to find your business. For example: pet, dog, adventure cat, dog mom, dog trainer, pet parent, labrador, dog treat recipes, dog groomer, etc.

You can take this advice to the next level by using keywords in all of your pin titles/descriptions and board titles/descriptions. Using pet niche keywords is how I was able to grow my account to over 1.4 million monthly impressions and get over 48,000 page views on my website directly from Pinterest in 6 months. Set up 10 Pinterest Boards in Your Pet Business Niche

If you’ve been a Pinterest user for a while, you probably already have some boards created. Now that we’re optimizing your Pinterest account to grow your pet business, I want you to audit your own boards and ensure they’re all on-brand and in your niche. Anything that is off-topic can be made into a secret board so you can still use it but nobody else will see it on your account.

I recommend you have 1 board dedicated to 100% pins from your own website, blog, online shop, etc. The other boards should tie into your niche within the pet industry. If you’re a dog trainer, you might have one board dedicated to fun tricks to teach your dog, another board about training your dog to walk well on a leash, another about products that make dog training easier. Get the idea?

Add a “Pin It” Button to Your Website

My 5th tip to grow your pet business on Pinterest is to make it easy for your website visitors to add your content to Pinterest on their own! That’s right, put your audience to work for you!

When you add a “Pin It” image plugin it will prompt your visitors and readers to add your helpful content to their own Pinterest boards. You can even add some text suggesting that they do so. If you followed tip number 2 to claim your website and add the tracking code, you’ll be able to check your Pinterest Analytics to see what images people are pinning on their own.
