Podcast Episode 326: Playing the Long Game with Pet Blogging: Caitlin Brown of Sparkles and Sunshine Blog

Do you feel like your blog posts are like a collection you started a long time ago and now they just sit on the shelf and collect dust? pet blogging can be discouraging if you’re not seeing traffic and results from your posts.

The Q3 theme here at Wear Wag Repeat is blogging. If you missed it, check out the previous expert interview with Pamela Keniston of Big Paws Marketing and solo episodes from me.

Today, I’m sharing a conversation with our August expert, Caitlin Brown of Sparkles and Sunshine Blog. I’ve known Caitlin for years and I’m always so impressed by the perseverance she has to keep creating fun, engaging and helpful content.

Caitlin creates a lot of content and she’s a data nerd as much as I am, so I’m excited to share this conversation with you because we’re speaking from years of experience blogging and analyzing the related data. Everything we discuss applies to bloggers like us and pet business owners who use blogging as a marketing strategy.

We share advice on playing the long game when it comes to your blog content and why it’s so important to write helpful content that serves your audience. If you’re putting a lot of effort into your pet business blog posts, they should still be relevant a year or two from now. Or even 10 years later, like some of my most popular blog posts!

We touch a bit on keyword research, but if you want to learn more about that go listen to last month’s episode for a deeper dive. Or if you’re in my membership, Wear Wag Repeat Society, we also have several lessons including screen share videos on how to find the right keywords to blog about.

One topic Caitlin and I cover in this episode is Pinterest. We are both big believers in Pinterest because it continues to drive a ton of traffic to our blogs. If you need help with Pinterest, make sure you’re on my email list so I can let you know when Pinterest for Petpreneurs Live is happening.

Pinterest works a lot like Google, you need to give it time for momentum to build. When we do the live round of my Pinterest course we’ll be focusing on pinning winter content.

Actionable Pet Blogging Tips for Your Business

Are you ready to implement what Cailtin and I talk about on this episode? Set your fall pet blogging up for success by following these 3 tips and taking action on the homework assignment.

Tip 1

Plan your blog content in advance so it is published prior to traffic spikes around holidays or search trends. You can use Google Trends + Pinterest Trends to research when those spikes might happen.

Tip 2

Know that certain blog content will perform better 6 months or a year after it’s been published because it takes time to build momentum.

Tip 3

On a monthly basis, you should create fresh Pinterest content that links back to your top posts and/or old posts that could use a traffic boost.

Your Assignment Today:

Look up any winter or holiday blog posts you’ve written in the last few years. Review them to make sure they’re up to date, accurate and all the links work. Then create 5-8 fresh Pinterest pin graphics for each blog post and pin them to Pinterest before the end of August!

Set a goal to dedicate 30 minutes a day for the next 3 days to this:
Day 1: 30 minutes looking for your old blog posts, reviewing them and making any minor updates
Day 2: Create the fresh Pinterest graphics for the blog posts
Day 3: Pin the new graphics to your Pinterest boards. Use a scheduler tool like Tailwind to stagger the posts over the next month.

OVERVIEW OF THIS EPISODE:

  • The benefits of scheduling holiday blog posts months in advance
  • Can content be seasonal and evergreen?
  • The value of resharing older content
  • Recommended tools and resources for planning pet blogging content
  • Why you should write content that benefits your audience
