Simple Gluten Free Dog Treat Recipe

I’ve been wanting to make my own dog treats for a while, but always lacked some of the tools and ingredients. When I come up with an idea to make something I like to use whatever I have around the house, and that never really worked for dog treats. So, last week I finally made a trip to the store and picked up some Brown Rice Flour and Powdered Milk, the two major ingredients I was missing for a lot of recipes.

I chose to use brown rice flour so these would be gluten free dog treats that we could share with all our doggy friends!

Check out my treat recipe and step by step process below then give these a try! It took me a little longer to make these treats than it should have since my cookie cutter was a little complex. If you use a simpler shape, it would definitely go a lot faster! Again, since these are gluten free they are great for sharing with puppy friends! A lot of dogs these days are on gluten free or poultry free diets – and these simple homemade treats don’t contain either!

I originally found this recipe on Pinterest. I happened to have homemade pumpkin puree from a pumpkin I had a few weeks ago, but you should definitely use canned. It is much easier! Just make sure that you buy 100% pure pumpkin, not pie filling! I found the brown rice flour and the powdered milk at Whole Foods, they weren’t very expensive at all.

Update: I just found this powdered goats milk on Amazon and ordered it for our next batch of homemade treats. Goats milk is great for your dog’s gut health! Hear all about it in this interview I did with the founder of The Bear and the Rat.

Making These Homemade Treats Couldn’t be Easier!

Ingredients:
2 eggs
1/2 cup pureed pumpkin
2 tablespoons dry milk
2 1/2 cups brown rice flour
1 teaspoon fresh or dried parsley (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin to smooth. Stir in dry milk, and parsley (if using). Add brown rice flour gradually, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (you can use the brown rice flour so the dough doesn’t stick) and if the dough is still rough, briefly knead and press to combine.

Roll the dough out so it’s between 1/4 – 1/2? thick depending on your dog’s chew preferences. Use a cookie cutter to punch shapes, gathering and re-rolling scraps as you go. Place shapes on a cookie sheet, no greasing or paper necessary.

Bake 20 minutes, then remove from the oven and carefully turn the treats over and bake for an additional 20 minutes. Allow the treats to cool completely on a rack before feeding to your pup!

What Fresh Herbs Can I add to Homemade Treats?

I happened to have fresh parsley left over from my herb garden, but you could also use dried. It will naturally help freshen your doggy’s breath!

Other herbs that are safe for dogs and you might have handy include mint, oregano or basil. You can also use rosemary, but I choose not to because there have been some studies that it’s not good for dogs with Epilepsy (like my recent rescue Burt). If your dog isn’t epileptic then rosemary is totally safe!

The Perfect Lab Shaped Cookie Cutter

I’ve been wanting to use this Lab shaped cookie cutter for ever, and this was the perfect excuse to bring it out. You can find the exact same one here, but like a mentioned a simpler shape would make this recipe go a LOT faster! But what do I need all that extra time for… seeing all these lab treats lined up in a row is just so cute. I think it’s totally worth it!

These sound great! I’ve already printed it out and can’t wait to make them. I have pumpkins I’ve been wanting to roast, but I’m not sure I’m going to have time before they go by. Canned always works, and I usually buy the organic stuff so I feel better about not making my own!

If you use Gluten Free Flour, it needs to be sifted, unlike regular flour. Also, I refrigerated the dough for an hour so it could set up. Also, Candiquick is o.k. for dogs. I checked their website and they have good ideas for gluten free and dog cookies.

Brown rice flour is sort of expensive for me to buy in a small brazilian town. Is there any substitute? thanks

Yes! You can use regular flour that you have on hand. Brown Rice Flour is just if you need to make it gluten free 🙂 Enjoy!
