Where there are tricks there will always be treats! Lucy and Burt are both eager to learn new skills since they know it always includes a lot of snacks. In honor of this giant Trick or Treat Halloween Giveaway I attempted to teach both of the dogs a new trick. They actually made great progress, but documenting it in photos with both of them present proved to be a bigger challenge!
Keep reading to learn about their tricks and more details on this amazing GIVEAWAY!

Teaching Lucy to Wave
Earlier this year I taught Lucy to shake and now it’s one of her go-to moves. If she’s really pumped about a treat and I don’t hand it over quickly enough she’ll throw up her paw to see if that will magically release the treats. Since she’ll easily do shake I decided to attempt to teach her to wave.
Wave is a progression of shake. Basically I asked Lucy to shake many times in a row and slowly moved my hand farther away. Eventually she couldn’t reach my hand so it turned into a wave. At that point I could change the command to “wave” and keep on repeating until Lucy got the hang of it.
Lucy did a great job learning this trick! However, for these photos she was very distracted by Burt and needed to make sure he didn’t get any of her treats. So…. stay tuned to our Instagram stories to see this trick in action when I can get the monsters alone!
Teaching Burt Down
When Burt first came into my life in early September he barely knew how to sit on command. He was a little wild and crazy, but who could blame him? He found his forever home! You’d be jumping up and down, too!
We started beginner obedience class after being together a few weeks. I was so impressed and touched by Burt’s eagerness to please me. He’s the sweetest dog, he just forgot his manners. After weeks of practice Burt will sit on demand 90% of the time. So for this challenge I decided to try to get him to lay down. This is pretty hard for him.
I’m training him by getting him in a sit then luring his nose down towards the floor with a treat. Since he doesn’t immediately go straight down I push the treat along the floor towards his back feet. This is supposed to get him to go down on the floor but it doesn’t work for us every time. This trick is still in progress! Once again, stay tuned to our stories to see how he progresses the rest of the month.

Tori you look so amazing, I love your look here and the dogs look awesome too, such lovely photos! xx
Love From Steph, Sev & Lily
Thank you so much! Might as well have a little fun with my outfit to distract from the fact that we’re still working on their tricks!
Our dog is blind now, but one trick I would like to teach him is to balance something on his nose.
Aww! I bet you could teach him that since it’s more about feeling and just listening to stay.
I would like to teach my Boston’s how to take a bow. I think it is too cute.
Yes, that would be so cute!
I’d like to teach Dexter to lie down and roll over
That’s a good one! My old dog lola loved to roll over!
I would like to teach my dog to heel.
That’s a very practical command and makes walking so much more enjoyable!
I would like to teach mine to sit and stay.
Very important skill!
I would like to teach my dog Sprout to balance a treat on his nose. Charlie can but Sprout can’t!
I love the dog on this blog. Omg
I would like my dog to learn to fetch her kong toy at treat time. I always have to search for it.
Thank you! Now it’s double trouble here since I added Burt! I’m always loosing our Kong, too!
i would like to teach my girls to weave between my legs.
fetch
That’s an easy one! Just reward with treats every time they bring the ball back : )
i want to teach my girls to weave between my legs.
i would like to teach my girls to weave in and out of my legs. i have posted many times but never see it. so i do not know if these are duplicates.
Thanks Sandy! I have to approve new comments on my blog so they’re all here. 🙂
I would like to teach Gunner how to roll over — learning to pick up his toys would be great too!
Picking up toys would be the dream trick!!
My dog passed in June of 2017. Was always happy with the tricks that he knew. My favorite was kisses. Miss him to pieces.
Aw, kisses is such a good trick!
I’ve had one dog who would wave. I hadn’t actually thought about teaching my current dogs the trick. Maybe it would be a good one for them to learn!
I thought it would be so cute for photos, still working on it!
I really want to teach my dog Myla some agility training!
I want to work up to that with Burt, too!
I’d love to teach mine to stay. He gets so excited but we’re working on it.
I’m working on it with Burt, too!
I’m working on training them to pick up toys and put them back.
Would love to teach my dog how to do spins
I would love to teach my dog to pick up her toys after playing.
I would like to teach my dog to army crawl.
I would love to teach my dog how to use and flush the toilet!
LOL! That would be a good one!
Id like to teach wave 🙂
I would like to teach my dog to play dead.
Teach them to crawl and speak
Crawl is a really cool trick!
We keep trying to get our pup to wave so we’ll have to try out some of your tips!
Good luck! Lucy is getting good at it, just not when Burt is around and she needs to look out for her treats!
My Peachies really smart! I want to teach her how to fetch MY items, not just her toys! A great example would be my hair brush in the mornings!
I want to teach her how to fetch MY items, not just her toys! A great example would be my hair brush in the mornings! Crawling and jumping thru a hoop would be great tricks too!
I would love to teach my dog to fetch
We want to teach our cat to fetch because our last cat did, but he is profoundly uninterested in learning any tricks!
I wish I could teach my dogs to calm down and relax. They get very nervous and afraid at so many things!
Sometimes giving them something to do can redirect that nervous energy. A lot of dogs spazz out when someone is at the door, so it can help to teach them to go get a toy when the doorbell rings : )
Different dogs have different tricks I want to teach them. Colby is about to learn leave it next.
I am hoping to tech my stubborn girl how to ring a bell to go outside.
It would be great to teach my girl Cadee how to bow!
The one trick I word love her to learn is “Don’t chew up the carpet”, but she apparently can’t hear the word “don’t”. I would also like to teach her to fetch specific things.
It’s kind of like manifesting… the universe doesn’t hear “don’t” either. You get what you think of the most – positive or negative! I wouldn’t be surprised if dogs are more in tune with the universe than us and they work that way too!
My sister wants to train her dog to take treats nicely from her hand instead of grabbing them from her. 🙂
That would be good! Work on “Easy” or “Gentle”
I’d like to teach my dog to play dead.
Your dogs are gorgeous! We love labs and currently have a yellow lab mix. Maverick is 7 but still so smart so teaching him a new trick shouldn’t be too bad. I want to teach him how to open the lower cabinet doors in my kitchen.
Your dogs are beautiful! We love labs. I want to teach my dog, Maverick, to open lower cabinet doors in rooms.
I’d like to teach my hound to “leave it” when she sees another dog nearby.
I did teach my second dog how to give me his paw, then the other one right after. I would like to try that again with one of my dogs now.
I’d like to teach my dog to jump over stuff.
I would like to teach my dog to sit and stay.
My daughter is training her dog to be a therapy dog so we go through treats very, very quickly!!!
Good luck on the new tricks
it would be cool to teach her to shake/
I wish I could teach my pups to roll over. For some reason, nothing can get them on their backs. They can play dead on their side like pros, but if it involves getting them on their backs, they freak……
I want to teach Luma to shake paws!
How to roll over.
I would like to teach my dog to roll over
I would teach my dogs not to stare while we are eating.
I would like to teach her to put away toys
I’d like to teach my dog how to roll over and play dead
Tiny is an older dog now very reliable and sweet. I would love to teach her to dial 911 in case of fire or another emergency.
That would be amazing!
I’d like to teach my dog to roll over.
Love to teach my dogs to roll over
Our bassett still hasn’t learned down so thanks for the tip. One way we have been trying is sitting down on the floor with knees up and getting her to crawl under the legs and holding her while giving the treat and saying down. Sort of working!
That’s creative! One thing I picked up from our trainer is to say “down” when their front elbows hit the floor. That’s when they’re doing it! If you say down a million times while they’re just sitting there not doing it then it can be confusing. Good luck!
I would like to teach mine to roll over. He can do most anything else but he refuses to do that. Thank you so much for such an awesome giveaway!!
Wow! That is a pretty advanced trick! Hopefully my lab could do the same! I’d love to teach him to jump through a hoop!
