Trick Or Treat Halloween Giveaway

Where there are tricks there will always be treats! Lucy and Burt are both eager to learn new skills since they know it always includes a lot of snacks. In honor of this giant Trick or Treat Halloween Giveaway I attempted to teach both of the dogs a new trick. They actually made great progress, but documenting it in photos with both of them present proved to be a bigger challenge!

 Trick or Treat Halloween Giveaway

Teaching Lucy to Wave

Earlier this year I taught Lucy to shake and now it’s one of her go-to moves. If she’s really pumped about a treat and I don’t hand it over quickly enough she’ll throw up her paw to see if that will magically release the treats. Since she’ll easily do shake I decided to attempt to teach her to wave.

Wave is a progression of shake. Basically I asked Lucy to shake many times in a row and slowly moved my hand farther away. Eventually she couldn’t reach my hand so it turned into a wave. At that point I could change the command to “wave” and keep on repeating until Lucy got the hang of it.

Lucy did a great job learning this trick! However, for these photos she was very distracted by Burt and needed to make sure he didn’t get any of her treats. So…. stay tuned to our Instagram stories to see this trick in action when I can get the monsters alone!

Teaching Burt Down

When Burt first came into my life in early September he barely knew how to sit on command. He was a little wild and crazy, but who could blame him? He found his forever home! You’d be jumping up and down, too!

We started beginner obedience class after being together a few weeks. I was so impressed and touched by Burt’s eagerness to please me. He’s the sweetest dog, he just forgot his manners. After weeks of practice Burt will sit on demand 90% of the time. So for this challenge I decided to try to get him to lay down. This is pretty hard for him.

I’m training him by getting him in a sit then luring his nose down towards the floor with a treat. Since he doesn’t immediately go straight down I push the treat along the floor towards his back feet. This is supposed to get him to go down on the floor but it doesn’t work for us every time. This trick is still in progress! Once again, stay tuned to our stories to see how he progresses the rest of the month.

I wish I could teach my dogs to calm down and relax. They get very nervous and afraid at so many things!

    Reply
    • Tori

Sometimes giving them something to do can redirect that nervous energy. A lot of dogs spazz out when someone is at the door, so it can help to teach them to go get a toy when the doorbell rings : )

    • Tori

It’s kind of like manifesting… the universe doesn’t hear “don’t” either. You get what you think of the most – positive or negative! I wouldn’t be surprised if dogs are more in tune with the universe than us and they work that way too!

Our bassett still hasn’t learned down so thanks for the tip. One way we have been trying is sitting down on the floor with knees up and getting her to crawl under the legs and holding her while giving the treat and saying down. Sort of working!

    Reply
    • Tori

That’s creative! One thing I picked up from our trainer is to say “down” when their front elbows hit the floor. That’s when they’re doing it! If you say down a million times while they’re just sitting there not doing it then it can be confusing. Good luck!
