INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

Two years ago, Marilyn left her career in the Bloomingdale’s Buying Office to start PawPointer after having a difficult time in her own search for a dog. Though she still enjoys keeping up with the latest fashion trends, she’s now focused full-time on helping others navigate the process of finding their new best friend without supporting puppy mills and cruel breeding practices. With the help of her 3-year old Brussels Griffon & perpetual employee of the month, Bowser, she’s built PawPointer from the ground up and is excited to see it make a difference in how we go about finding our next pet.

Tori: What makes PawPointer different than the other channels for finding a dog?

Marilyn: PawPointer came out of my own search for a dog. A few years ago my husband and I decided to get a dog. We went about it like most people do, searching online. Then I found out about the AKC Meet the Breed event where you can meet hundreds of dogs and breeders. That’s where we discovered the Brussels Griffon breed, and our breeder. It was night and day from our online experience. The breeder was so knowledgeable, we got to meet the dogs, ask questions. It was a great experience. That was my “a-ha moment,” when I realized there needed to be an online resource that embodied that spirit with transparency and education. PawPointer is an online community of breeders and rescues who are passionate and do it for the love of the dog.

Tori: What has been the most challenging part of starting your business?

Marilyn: My number one priority for about a year was to build up the community of my website before launching it. I traveled to AKC meetings all over the place to get the word out. Today we have 40 or 50 breeders and rescues on the site, so we have a long way to go, but when I reach that milestone I felt we had enough of a community to open up the site to the public. That was really exciting for me!

Tori: What is the most important bit of advice you could give someone looking for a dog?

Marilyn: The number one thing is to be patient with the process. Another big thing before you get a dog is to be honest with yourself about your own lifestyle and how you see a dog fitting into your day to day activities. When you can share your life with your dog, you have a best friend for life.

Tori: Do you have any tips on looking fashionable while walking the dog? 

Marilyn: Since I used to work at Bloomingdale’s I find a lot of great stylish pieces there. Obviously you want to be comfortable! I wear a lot of stylish sneakers like the Nike Cortez and cute leggings with details like leather strips or moto details. I go towards the athleisure side, which is great because it’s a trend so it’s easy to find.
