I’m continuing coverage of Pet Dental Health Awareness Month by talking with Dr. Emily Stein, the co-founder and inventor of TEEF. Poor oral hygiene can cause a wide range of health problems for dogs, so Dr. Stein walks us through why cleaning your dog’s teeth is so crucial, why treats and brushing aren’t the best solutions, and how TEEF is trying to bring awareness to new ways to clean your dog’s teeth.
Inventing New Ways to Clean Your Dog’s Teeth
Dr. Emily Stein first developed a fascination with the microbial universe in college at the University of Iowa. She pursued this passion to the University of California-Berkeley, where she sharpened her understanding of how bacteria behave and survive in tough environments. After she earned her PhD, she attended Stanford University to pursue a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Immunology & Rheumatology after witnessing the degradation of her grandmother’s quality of life because of rheumatoid arthritis.
Inspired by her rescue dog Tinsley (a black and white cocker spaniel) who came to her with horrendous oral health from years of neglect, Emily used her expertise to invent TEEF. It’s a water additive that empowers good bacteria + out-competes the bad bacteria for a naturally-balanced, healthier mouth.
