I have endless ideas and thoughts I need to blog about after Alt Summit, so let’s start at the very end and work our way back. On the final morning there were various city tours to sign up for. About 5 million girls signed up for the Instagram tour (which looked amazing) so I decided to go on the shopping tour, even thought I couldn’t close my suitcase already!
The tour was hosted by Jeanette Gonzales, who is an awesomely talented designer (check her out, seriously). It turns out, she didn’t really want us to shop for things, rather for ideas. I love elevated experiences like this that require you to put a lot of thought into second nature tasks. I once did a rum focus group tasting at Wigle Whiskey and have never looked at drinking the same way! I would have never picked a bottle of rum up prior to this – my chosen drink would almost always be a glass of wine or, on occasion, gin. Even when I was younger, using the best fake ID sites so that I could drink with my friends, I would drink vodka. It’s amazing how an experience like this can change your opinion so quickly.
Anyhow, Jeanette took us around to a few Salt Lake City boutiques and told us to look for recurring themes in the shop (like cats in Anthropologie, there are so many cats!). The first store we went in was a dream. I love shops where there is so much to look at, little curiosities, inexpensive gifts next to antique carved wood investments, fabrics, etc. Bohem has all that an more. With Jeanette’s directive I started to look for a theme around the shop.
I quickly settled on eyes and started to see them everywhere. Are eyes having a moment? Or does this shop owner just have a thing for them? I guess that’s what trend spotting is! So either congratulations, I’ve just let you in on the next big trend, or sorry, you just spent a bunch of money on eyeballs.
Even after I left Bohem I was seeing eyes all over Salt Lake City. Check out their cross walks below. This is painted on the street at almost every corner. So, be on the lookout and let me know if you start seeing this trend all over the place.
Hey Tori. It’s called Baader Meinhof phenomenon…when the thing you learn about starts popping up every where. It’s white rabbits for me. Enjoy!
It’s so true! I’ll have to keep that term in mind, it will make me sound so smart when I remember to bring it up! Thanks!
