As a chocolate labrador mom for almost 20 years, I’ve heard so many great name suggestions and guesses from people who met my 5 dogs over the years.
In this blog post, I share 30+ classic names for chocolate labradors and 55+ unique names. I also split the lists into great names for male dogs and female dogs.
Some of the dog names I included are inspired by what I hear people suggesting at the dog park. Others are from some of my favorite labradors (including my own!). A few are borrowed from suggestions in dog mom Facebook groups. I also added a few badass chocolate lab names in there if your pup has a big personality. I hope you enjoy the list!

How do you pick the best name for your lab?
Chocolate labs make amazing companions, pets and best friends! They deserve a name that lives up to all that.
You might want to consider a dog name with a meaning tied to some of the activities you plan to do together.
If you love hunting and the outdoors, there are names for that. I even included plenty of badass names for your chocolate lab!
If you think chocolate labs are the SWEETEST dogs (which they are!), maybe you should go for a candy-inspired name.
I also love to get dog name inspiration from some of my favorite books and musicians. With my old dog Lola there were so many songs we could sing to her! With my current lab Lucy I love to sing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
Sometimes you need to meet your new lab pup or adult rescue in person to know what their name should be. I hope my suggestions here help you narrow down the options.

We are a chocolate family. Our first one was named Fisher for the work they were bred to do help the fisherman. After our Fisher passed which was the saddest day ever. Our next pup was named Asher struggled with this one but went Asher since it was Hebrew for happy or good and he was healing our hearts, we still have Asher and just got a new pup in December, Finn had always been a name in my back pocket since we had Fisher(I wanted a yellow lab named Finn) we had several in play for newest addition and for his first he was just little brother. But we settled on Boone (we got Boone in PA – where Daniel Boone was from, Boone means good or blessing which is what we need. I struggle with dog names they just have to fit or connection for us. Thanks for your list!
Thank you for sharing about all your great dogs, Mel! I love all the names. Finn and Fisher are two great ones for labs!
