Now that it’s officially December I’m sharing an amazing Caprese Christmas Tree appetizer snack that I made for my party last year! I could have posted this in October when all the stores put Christmas decorations out, but I just couldn’t do that to you. Some things just have to wait until the correct month! If you’re hosting a party, or even going to a potluck, and looking for a way to make a splash then I have just the thing for you!
Caprese Christmas Appetizer
I came up with this idea last year and couldn’t find any decent inspiration photos anywhere, and you know I love to spend entire evenings on Pinterest looking for such things. So this is all my own creation!
I love tomato and mozzarella with basil, also known as a Caprese Salad. There are tons of recipes for this delicious combination. But the basic preparation is to combine the tomato, mozzarella and basil with a little drizzle of EVOO, Balsamic vinegar (if you like), and salt and pepper.
I like party food to be utensil-free as much as possible! So, I usually skewer some cherry tomatoes with this little fresh mozzarella balls. Last year I took it to a whole other level by sticking all my little skewers onto a foam cone to make a Caprese Christmas Tree!
How to Make a Caprese Christmas Tree
You’ll Need:
- Foam Cone like this (tip: choose a size smaller than you think you’ll need)
- Container (this Birch-look one would be sooooo great!)
- Decorative Toothpicks
- Mini Caprese Balls (buy them in a marinade to save some time!)
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Broccoli for your tree base
How to put together your tree:
I started by filling in broccoli florets for the bottom of the tree. These take up a lot of space and hide whatever you used to fill the container. You can stick some in with toothpicks and then nestle smaller pieces in the gaps.
For the Caprese toothpick skewers I alternated with cutting some of the cheese and some of the tomatoes in half. I also alternated cheese on top of half the skewers with tomato on top of the other half to give the tree a variety of red and white on the outside. Just keep sticking until you have the whole thing filled up! You’ll be surprised how much you need, which is why I recommend choosing a small foam cone.
You can see that the tree fit in perfectly with the rest of my buffet at the party. It’s nice to have something tall on the table, bonus, it takes up less table space!
Feeling in the holiday mood a little bit more after this post! I hope you enjoyed it!

Tori, this is SO CUTE! Love it!!
Thanks Maggie! It was super cute in person, I completely recommend trying it. Get a smaller foam cone than you think you need!
