DIY Wonka Bar Dog Costume for Halloween

I don’t know why I didn’t think of going as Wonka Bars earlier! With two chocolate labradors, it seems like a natural choice. If you know me and my costumes, I had to get in on the action and turn this into a group costume.

I dressed as a zany Willy Wonka thanks to a borrowed orange blazer, a fun scarf from my closet and a funky top hat headband that I added a few DIY flourishes to.

If you’d rather stay behind the scenes, your dog can go as a Wonka Bar on their own and it will still be a hit!

DIY Wonka Bar Costume for Dogs Guide

Wonka Bar DogCostume Materials:

  • Pink felt (enough to cover your dog’s back blanket style)*
  • Black felt for letters
  • Orange felt for accents
  • Golden or yellow felt for the golden ticket (here’s a multi-pack with all the colors!)
  • Sharpie or black paint for Golden Ticket
  • Fabric glue or hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Dog jacket or sweater (to attach the Wonka Bar costume to)
  • Pink Duct Tape (to secure the costume on your base jacket/sweater)
  • Fabric marker or chalk

*I made two Wonka Bar costumes, one for each of my dogs. Only one of the costumes has a functional pocket for the Golden Ticket. To make the pocket, I just folded up the pink felt and glued it around the edges.

If you want to add on the pocket, make sure you have enough pink felt to fold it up on itself.

Step-by-Step Guide to Make the Wonka Bar Costume for Your Pup

Step 1: Measure Your Dog
Begin by measuring the length dog’s back for the length of the pink felt. For the width, measure from one of your dog’s elbows, up and around to the other side’s elbow (roughly!). This will ensure that the costume drapes over your dog’s back.

If you’re adding the pocket for the golden ticket, double the width measurement on one side.

Step 2: Cut the Pink Felt
Using your measurements, cut out a rectangle from the pink felt. This will be the base of the Wonka Bar.

Step 3: Create the Golden Ticket Pocket
On one side of the pink felt, fold up a section to create a pocket. The pocket should be big enough to hold the golden ticket. Secure the pocket by gluing or stitching the sides.

Step 4: Design the Letters
Draw or trace the word “WONKA” onto the black felt. Carefully cut out each letter.

To replicate the logo on the Wonka Bar, I also traced and cut out a little top hat and the word “BAR” from orange felt.

Step 5: Attach the Letters
Arrange the letters on the pink felt base, ensuring they’re centered one one side. You want the bar design to be on your dog’s side.

Once you’re happy with the letter placement, secure them using fabric glue, hot glue or stitch them in place.

Step 6: Design the Golden Ticket for your DIY Wonka Bar Dog Costume
Cut a rectangle from the golden/yellow felt, slightly smaller than the pocket. Write or draw “Golden Ticket” on the ticket using a fabric marker, sharpie or fabric paint.

Add as much detail as you’d like! I cut scalloped edges on my golden ticket.

Tips for Ensuring Your Dog’s Comfort in Their Halloween Costume

Always measure twice to ensure the costume fits comfortably without restricting your dog’s movement.

I attached the pink felt Wonka Bar to two dog jackets that my dogs already have an are comfortable in. To attach them, I used hot pink duct tape. It didn’t leave an residue, but it kept the costumes in place long enough for photos and a dog costume party.

Halloween can be a fun time, but also a dangerous time for our dogs.

When planning your dog’s costume, avoid placing any decorations where they might irritate your dog, like under the neck or in their arm pits.

And remember to regularly check for any loose parts that might pose a choking hazard.

One last Halloween dog safety tip: Make sure that your dog’s costume includes their collar with ID tags and up to date contact information.
