That early love of costumes and trick-or-treating has continued throughout my life. Now I get to come up with creative Halloween costumes for my dogs and me to wear together!
Over the years we’ve had some amazing costumes – and been featured in CountryLiving, Woman’s Day, The Dodo, The Pioneer Woman, and more – so I thought it would be helpful to create one blog post with all 7 creative DIY dog Halloween costume ideas in 1 place.
Most of these are DIY using craft supplies or items you might have in your own closet. I try to avoid store-bought costumes as much as I can, but sometimes it’s easier to buy something! Do whatever you need to make this Halloween fun and fear-free!

Snow White, The Wicked Witch and Poison Apple
I was inspired to re-create one of my favorite childhood movies for our matching dog and owner costume. I always loved Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
For my matching costume with the dogs, I came up with this adorable costume for the three of us. I’m really happy with our take on Snow White, the poison apple and the evil witch!
Spaghetti and Meatballs DIY Dog Costume
I don’t know if it’s all the pasta I ate during quarantine in 2020, but for some reason, I had the idea to dress Lucy and Burt up as Spaghetti and Meatballs for Halloween!
I love this DIY dog costume so much because it makes everyone smile. I love to spread joy and happiness through what I do with my dogs… especially at Halloween time!
Surfer Girl + Shark Costume
A scary labrador shark got a bite out of my surfboard! But I forgive her because she’s so cute!
This DIY costume is great because it’s very dog-walking friendly. You can easily head out to a Halloween costume parade or join in on trick or treating. Get the Surfer and Shark Costume DIY guide here.
Dorothy + The Lion Halloween Idea
Are you ready for the cutest Halloween couples costume that you can do with your dog? It’s Dorothy and The Lion from the Wizard of Oz!
I am in love with these costumes on me and Lucy! Although I don’t think she looks like much of a Cowardly Lion… She’s more like a super friendly Lion who would like another treat ASAP.
Rabbit + Magician
This is one of my favorite stylish and fun couples costumes you can do with your dog! I loved dressing up together as a Rabbit and a Magician!
I put a little twist on things and made Lucy the magician while I played the rabbit. This was a very fun costume to “trick or treat” in during our photoshoot, and it’s also very comfortable for both of us.
Dog Halloween Costume Safety
Before you head out with your dog in a fabulous Halloween costume, please consider their happiness and safety.
Dogs should not wear costumes for longer than they’re comfortable. That will vary for each dog. If you plan on wearing a costume for a while, you should start small a few weeks before the big day and help your dog get comfortable with the elements of their costume.
Be careful of dog Halloween costumes that have small parts or pieces that can come off and might become a choking hazard.
Another Halloween safety thing to consider when it comes to celebrating Spooky season with your dog is… other people! Don’t assume that your friendly dog will be OK with all the other people in costume. Especially if there are freaky decorations, weird noises and different smells happening around them.
Even the most easygoing dog could be triggered by the unique elements of Halloween. If you’re out for a celebration with your dog and they seem uncomfortable, I recommend leaving the party and taking your dog home. This is one situation where I encourage you to GHOST!

Hi Tori,
I like the Snow White, the poison apple and the evil witch! costume best, and I have to say I had a hard time with choosing the first one. It edged out Spaghetti and Meatballs that I placed in second spot, lol.
Thank you Brenda! I know, it’s very hard to pick a favorite costume. We have so much fun doing this each year. Happy Halloween!!
