Why Your Dog Training Business Name Matters

Does your business name really matter that much? If you’re providing amazing dog training services, then who cares what you call it?

Unfortunately, if you take that mindset then you could be missing out on a lot of opportunities.

It’s worth it to take the time to come up with the perfect name that accurately represents you, your training approach, and your overall brand vibe. Plus, if you have a creative and catchy name it could help create a buzz in your community because people will enjoy sharing it.

As a pet parent and dog blogger, when I’m looking for local dog trainers online I get a lot of information from just their business name.

Some names give off the first impression that a trainer is all about helping reactive dogs or setting puppies up for success.

Other business names give me the first impression that certain styles of dog training are being used.

If you have a fun and friendly business name, you’re likely to appeal to pet owners who enjoy that kind of energy. On the other hand, if you want to attract a very serious target audience, you will need a much more serious business name.

This is why it’s really important that you put thought into choosing the right name. The first impressions when dog owners see you pop up on Google or social media could be the deciding factor on them reaching out to you (or not). It’s a little harsh but true!

Things to Consider Before Choosing Your Dog Training Business Name

Beyond first impressions, it’s important to have a thorough understanding of your business and what types of services you will be offering.

Will your business be focused on:

  • 1-on-1 training
  • Solving problem behaviors
  • Board and trains
  • Group classes
  • Specialty classes like canine good citizen or trick dog?
  • Do you want to go to people’s homes?
  • Will you have a dog training school facility?

Spend time brainstorming everything that you want to do in your dog training business right away. Then think big! Brainstorm what your dream business looks like.

Choosing the right name now will set you up for success to reach your dream one day.

Check that Your Business Name is Available

Speaking of the big picture… you want to have an online presence for potential customers to find you. This should include a website and social media accounts.

As you pick out a unique name for your new business, you need to look into the availability of the name as a domain and username across social media platforms.

To check if a domain name is available, do a Google search for it or check on Google Domains.

For social media handles, you have to go to each platform and check to make sure your name isn’t already being used by someone else.

I strongly suggest you do this before you fall in love with a new business name! You don’t want to pick something that is already being used by a ton of people on social media. It will make it difficult for your clients to find your account, tag you in posts and share your business with all their online friends.

Moral of the story… think ahead and pick a name dog training business name that will serve you now and in the future!

Tips for Coming up with a Memorable and Catchy Dog Training Business Name

Now that we have a clear idea of what types of services your business will offer, your target audience, and checked domain name availability, it’s time for the fun part – brainstorming that perfect pet business name!

Use A Business Name Generator

Business name generators can be incredibly helpful when you’re feeling stuck or just starting out.

They can churn out interesting combinations you might not have thought of and can spark further ideas.

A few popular business name generators are:

Remember, these are starting points, so I wouldn’t recommend using a name that popped right out of a generator. This is just to get your creative wheels turning!

Incorporate Your Name or Your Pet’s Name

Something else to think about is if you should incorporate your name or your pet’s name into the business. It makes your business personal and relatable and instantly provides a story behind the brand.

For instance, you might think if something like “K9 Capers with Kelly” or “Buster’s Behavior Training.”

However, think carefully about the longevity of this choice. If your pet’s name is unique and catchy, it might work perfectly. But if it’s common, you might want to consider another approach.

Having your own name in the business can also limit you if you plan to grow and hire additional trainers in the future.

I’ve also spoken with many petpreneurs who named their business after their pet who later crossed the rainbow bridge. These individuals have told me that they don’t regret that at all!

Having their rainbow bridge pet’s name in the business is a daily reminder of why they do what they do and the wonderful memories they shared.

Keep Your Business Name Simple, Relevant and Memorable

Simplicity is key in a business name. Think of all the big names we know today – Amazon, Google, Apple. They’re all simple, easy to say, and easy to remember.

For my business, if I knew my hobby blog would become my career, I might have chosen something more straightforward than Wear Wag Repeat! Oops!

Make sure your business name is relevant to the pet industry. A name like “Pawsitive Training” gives an immediate indication of what the business is about.

Lastly, make your business name catchy. Using fun word tools like alliteration, rhymes, and puns can work wonderfully in making a name stick in your potential client’s mind. Who could forget a name like “Sit Happens”?

You have some great tips here. One big one is definitely checking to make sure that a name is available! A local dog trainer here recently was slapped with paperwork saying they had to change their name (had been using it for 2 years) or get hit with a lawsuit. They had operated unnoticed for a while, but the fact they didn’t double-check eventually came back to bite them. It’s always better to be diligent and do it right the first time. Now they are stuck doing a complete rebrand.

Ugh! That is frustrating! Picking something unique is always a good idea. I don’t know what the name of the business is that you’re talking about, but I wonder if it was a little too generic. In the dog world so many things have very similar names! Makes me think that Wear Wag Repeat isn’t so bad after all because at least nobody else is trying to use that! Although years ago I met a lovely woman with a shop called Dog Love Repeat 🙂
